Laboratory Team Lead - Hudson Bridge

JOB SUMMARY

Supervises the Urgent Care laboratory department’s activities to achieve quality service and outcomes.  Provides quality clinical information by accurately performing laboratory testing procedures.  Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing group leader duties to encourage consistent use of Lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements. Works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients.

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor of Science in medical technology, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution

  • Meets CLIA acceptable requirements for a supervisor  defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent) or meet the requirements the CMS standard § 493.1461 for General Laboratory Supervisor qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
    • Have at least one year laboratory training or experience or both in a high complexity laboratory
EXPERIENCE*
  • 5 years of experience in a clinical setting or advanced degree with 1 year of experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Bachelor of Science in medical technology, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution and certified by ASCP or equivalent accreditation agency
  • Previous pediatric and supervisory experience
  • BLS Certification is required within 30 days of hire

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
  1. Performs administrative tasks required to support the overall operation of the department, including ongoing activities related to ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies.
    • Demonstrates effective leadership skills, including coaching of all members of the team to clarify performance expectations. 
    • Provides timely feedback in a positive manner that supports staff success and promotes ownership and commitment. 
    • Completes annual performance evaluations.
    • Identifies opportunities to participate in the development and implementation of strategies that result in the improvement of clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  2. Interacts with other health care workers to provide information, use critical thinking skills to solve problems, and make recommendations. 
  3. Performs related responsibilities as an Urgent Care Medical Technologist as required.
  4. Actively involved in hiring new staff.  
    • Recognizes the necessity of all staff owning their own motivation, morale, performance and professional development.
    • Actively encourages performance and behavior consistent with a staff member’s commitment to the lab’s and CHOA’s mission, goals, and values by providing the materials and processes necessary to be successful.
  5. Actively promotes a Lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of Lean principals and processes, in order to achieve quality and cost objectives.
    • Facilitates the implementation of Lean process improvement ideas. 
    • Performs standard work, and metric reviews, audits and gemba walks.
    • Using an awareness of how the work performed is valued by the customer, perform duties, make decisions, take actions and continually strive to improve work processes
  6. Performs other duties as assigned by the Urgent Care Laboratory Manager to support the ongoing needs of the department.
  7. Assist Supervisor and/or Manager with development of staff by: being available to teammates, acting as a resource to help complete complicated/complex tasks, providing on the job training to team, and seeking out opportunities to become actively involved in staff workflow and development.
  8. Provide Supervisor and/or Manager feedback on staff performance, educational needs, and workflow status.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
