JOB SUMMARY

Chidlren's Healthcare of Atlanta is hiring a Sr. Unix Engineer to join our permanent team.  The Sr. Unix Engineer designs, configures, supports, and manages Unix/Linux-based systems per customer and project requirements. Designs and configures Unix/Linux management applications to proactively monitor, configure, and patch.

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Information Systems, related field, or equivalent experience
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
EXPERIENCE*
  • 7 years of experience in supporting Unix/Linux operating systems
  • 5 years of experience in shell scripting, backup management, and kernel tuning or a combination of all three
  • 5 years of experience in managing AIX operating system
  • 5 years supporting 24x7x365 Operations with afterhours on-call troubleshooting
  • 3 years of OS experience supporting database environments
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • IBM AIX System Administrator
  • High Availability clustering with RHEL Linux or AIX PowerHA 
  • Virtualization experience with VMware or PowerVM
  • Experience in InterSystems Caché DB Support
  • Experience in a healthcare environment with Epic Systems
  • RHEL Satellite Patching experience
  • Centrify Active Directory or other (ie, SSSD LDAP) User Access management experience
  • Experience with 3rd Party Scanning / Monitoring Tools (ie, Qualsys, SPLUNK, etc)
  • Experience with Avamar Backup Tools
  • Experience with OS / SAN filesystem configurations

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
  1. Oversees entire lifecycle of Unix/Linux systems, including design, procurement, configuration, deployment (physical and virtual), support, ongoing management, upgrades, and retirement.
  2. Designs, configures, and manages Unix/Linux server management systems that proactively monitor, configure, and patch servers.
  3. Designs, configures, and manages resilient systems that employ backups, redundancy, high availability (e.g., PowerHA), and solutions for disaster recovery.
  4. Creates and manages monitoring alerts for assigned servers and systems and helps integrate with enterprise monitoring tools.
  5. Responds to monitoring alerts in a timely fashion and proactively addresses capacity and availability issues before they affect users.
  6. Functions as a technical support project liaison, ensuring effective transition from project pre-implementation to go-live to day-to-day support.
  7. Performs careful capacity planning and systems engineering to ensure implementation of solutions that meet client/project requirements.
  8. Develops and tests scripts, scheduled tasks, and other methods of automation to produce more reliable, consistent, and self-sufficient systems.
  9. Acts as technical support resource for internal customers and departments.
  10. Produces and maintains documentation of systems and processes in the form of policies, procedures, inventories, and presentations and shares with appropriate audiences (e.g., peers, clients, and management) as needed.
  11. Provides training for both internal clients and peers as needed.
  12. Builds rapport with other departments, users, and vendors and leverages to present Information Systems & Technology's side and produce win/win outcomes.
  13. Works with vendors to ensure communication of internal processes and change control adherence.
  14. Corrects identified vulnerabilities by applying related security patches or through appropriate hardening procedures.
  15. Reviews for system impact, tracks, and installs software upgrades and fixes for operating systems, Epic, and other applications as needed to ensure systems are stable, secure, and fully compliant with internal policies and external regulations.
  16. Participates in 24/7 Operations Support/Incident Management on-call rotation.
  17. Provides ad hoc third-tier escalation support for other on-call staff.
  18. Performs routine password changes for root accounts and other administrative accounts.
  19. Acquires and maintains authoritative knowledge of assigned systems through independent study, hands-on work, and training.
  20. Participates in P1 leadership escalation management when requested.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
