JOB SUMMARY

Provides technical support and expertise in the fabrication of orthotic and prosthetic devices in collaboration with orthotic and prosthetic clinical staff. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • No professional certifications required
EXPERIENCE*
  • Three years of experience in orthotics and/or prosthetics technical
  • Internal promotion criteria: Meets all basic competencies and essential job duties for Orthotic/Prosthetic Technician II
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics registered technician
  • Experience in pediatric orthotics/prosthetics
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*
  • Effective use of computer to access clinical information regarding device fabrication and to support fabrication lab operations
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with colleagues
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
  1. Performs fabrication responsibilities of Orthotic/Prosthetic Technician 2.
  2. Repairs and problem solves complex fabrication designs independently.
  3. Completes assigned projects accurately in their entirety, interpreting clinical documentation regarding design specifics so that outcomes are achieved.
  4. Advises clinical team regarding material selection and properties based on treatment goals.
  5. Assumes individual project management from start to completion. 
  6. Initiates strategies to manage high-volume caseload, difficult/complex projects, and rush assignments, and has organized approach to own caseload.
  7. Assists supervisor with project assignment as needed.
  8. Assumes additional responsibilities that may include lab and machinery maintenance, inventory, and ordering.
  9. Trains and develops skills of Orthotic/Prosthetic Technicians 1 and 2.
  10. Supports lab supervisor in American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics compliance.

 

Orthotic Responsibilities

  1. Independently vacuum forms, trims, and finishes all foot, ankle-foot, knee-ankle-foot, and wrist-hand orthotic designs according to department procedure and standards, and ensures finished work matches work order.
  2. Assists with trim-out and finish of spinal orthoses.
  3. Fabricates more advanced orthotic designs, e.g., cranial helmets and hip-knee-ankle-foot/reciprocating gait orthoses.

 

Prosthetic Responsibilities

  1. Independently vacuum forms and prepares below knee and above knee test sockets according to work order.
  2. Independently performs below knee and above knee socket and finish laminations with acrylic, polyester, and/or silicone according to work order.
  3. Transfers, finishes, and assembles endo- and exo-skeletal below knee and above knee prostheses, including foam cover shaping and application of prosthetic skin.
  4. Fabricates more advanced prosthetic designs, such as hip disarticulation, below/above elbow, and myoelectrics.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
