Performs a variety of duties in relationship to decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization, and distribution of trays/sets, equipment, and supplies with direct supervision. Performs routine cleaning such as wiping down tables. Participates in distribution of operating room supplies and trays/sets. Performs all tasks as assigned in a neat and organized manner. Maintains and prevents cross contamination by observing dress codes, environmental policies, and traffic control. Completes advanced internal training in a surgical specialty and serves as a department resource for the assigned specialty(ies).


  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a surgical technology or sterile processing technician program or three years of experience in a clinical environment


  • Sterile processing certification


  • Three years of experience in a clinical environment or surgical technology or sterile processing technician program graduate


  • Experience in a surgical services environment


  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills


  1. Completes all job functions of a SPD Technician.
  2. Serves as a resource to other team members on the processing and assembly of trays for designated specialty(ies).
  3. Serves as back up for supervisor/team lead in their absence as requested.
  4. Provides a minimum of 2 staff in-services on the instruments and trays for assigned service. In-services should include surgical technician staff members.
  5. Serves as a preceptor for the department for new staff members.
  6. Assist with annual competency check offs.
  7. Serves as a resource to the OR team for the assigned service.


Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
