Vascular Access Team (RN) - Scottish Rite /Egleston (full time nights)

Provides direct and indirect patient care through application of nursing process. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates vascular assess sites and devices (e.g., peripherally inserted central catheter and intravenous sites) throughout system. Serves as clinical resource and consultant to other healthcare professionals for the care of children. Guides and can supervise assigned nursing personnel, collaborates with other healthcare professionals, coordinates with ancillary staff, and functions within Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's policies and procedures framework within legal framework of the state. Demonstrates excellent customer service performance and supports standards contained in the vision, mission, and values of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Displays leadership skills and involvement in research related to various aspects of vascular access program.


  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing


  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the single State of Georgia or Multi-State through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)


  • 1 year of experience in nursing
  • 1 year of experience in peripherally inserted central catheter line care and intravenous insertion
  • 2 years of clinical experience preferred


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in pediatrics
  • Experience in vascular access devices (e.g., lab draws, port access, dressing changes, declotting central line, removal of central line/peripherally inserted central catheter, central line repair, infiltration/extravasation management)


  • Professional communication skills


Patient Care

  1. Demonstrates clinical proficiency regarding insertion and care of peripheral intravenous lines.
  2. Demonstrates clinical proficiency regarding assessment, placement, management, and troubleshooting peripherally inserted central catheter lines.
  3. Initiates appropriate education and instruction to patients/families based upon evaluation to meet learning needs.
  4. Provides consultation, education, and/or assistance to staff regarding management of vascular access devices.
  5. Performs ongoing assessment and process improvement to ensure quality in care and services.
  6. Demonstrates proficiency with pain management techniques for vascular access insertions.
  7. Demonstrates knowledge in the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological stages of growth and development.


Staff Development

  1. Serves as role model for others in their involvement in and support of learning to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise.
  2. Provides informal in-services yearly and as needed to ensure current knowledge and competence in vascular access devices.
  3. Provides assistance to devise and revise educational materials and learning experiences for staff, patients, and families.
  4. Develops and revises policies, procedures, and guidelines related to vascular access.
  5. Maintains own professional development.


Department Requirements

  1. Participates in development and implementation of program’s goals and projects.
  2. Complies with infection control, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration procedures and regulations.
  3. Maintains department budget with established fiscal guidelines.
  4. Participates in cost containment through efficient use of supplies, services, and time management.
  5. Analyzes stock items and recommends appropriate additions and deletions to ensure quality and cost effectiveness of products used for pediatric vascular access.
  6. Conducts product evaluations when indicated and submits reports and recommendations based on results.
  7. Serves on system-wide committees and projects as requested.
  8. Ensures all peripherally inserted central catheter program staff are trained in charge entry and balancing with each nurse responsible for entering charges for procedures and supplies on the day services were provided. 
  9. Participates in peripheral intravenous monitoring and quality audits.


Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
