Assists pharmacist and prepares medications to be dispensed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist according to State and Federal law.

  • A high school diploma and an active registration with the State of Georgia as a Pharmacy Technician are required.
  • Proficient in all job functions as described in the Pharmacy Technician I job description. Knowledge of medical/pharmaceutical terminology and generics is preferred.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to learn and use computer systems are required.
  • National certification as a pharmacy technician (and maintenance of certification) or a 4-year college degree is required.
  • Previous work experience consisting of one of the following is preferred:

1 year of experience as a pharmacy technician in a pediatric hospital pharmacy environment

OR  -

2 years of experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy environment. AND Successful completion of an ASHP accredited (or comparable) pharmacy technician training program.

  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher within 30 days to date of hire.

Assists pharmacists by anticipating and prioritizing the workload accurately and efficiently.

  Demonstrates the ability to anticipate, prioritize and manage workload accurately and efficiently.

Organizes and prioritizes phone calls and window traffic, and keeps the pharmacist informed.

Consistently demonstrates the ability to maintain a smooth work flow and to problem solve for assigned work areas.

Collects and organizes all pertinent information under the direction of the pharmacist.

Limits the scope of information he or she discusses with allied health professionals, physicians, and the public to that which is appropriate for pharmacy technicians.

Serves as a resource for other staff members regarding policy and procedures and information related to the preparation and distribution of medications as well as all other departmental and hospital policy and procedures.

Precepts new and existing staff members.

Participates in orientation and training of new and existing employees.

Participates in orientation and training of pharmacy students and residents.

Participates in training material development.

Teaches others through example of high professional standards that support the department goals and the provision of pharmaceutical care.

Uses effective educational techniques in all training and educational activities.

Identifies performance deficiencies of new employees and provides feedback/training in an effort to correct deficiencies.

Routinely provides feedback of employee’s progress to the Education Pharmacist or Team Leaders.

Serves as an approved technician preceptor.

Maintains individual competence and develops professional practice skills.

Participates in required departmental training, education and certification.

Completes all required orientation/training checklist(s) and modules.

Completes projects to develop professional skills and achieve goals of the department.

Uses extra time advantageously by demonstrating teamwork to help others or to work on departmental projects.

At least “Meets Expectations” for performance of all Technician I responsibilities and scores an “Exceeds Standard” or “Exceptional/Exceeds Expectations” in at least 3 performance areas.

Maintains active status as a Certified Pharmacy Technician via continuing education.

Contributes to the achievement of pharmacy goals and objectives through effective participation during inservices, weekly staff meetings, and Pharmacy Process Improvement Team meetings.

Reviews minutes of all missed weekly staff meetings.

Exhibits proficient performance in at least two work areas.

Demonstrates leadership skills. 

Demonstrates the ability to assess unusual situations and appropriately brings issues or concerns to the attention of a pharmacist or manager.

Accepts the responsibility and accountability for the continuous improvement and quality assurance measurements of assigned work area(s).

Develops rapport with patient care units by being highly visible and available to serve their needs and address concerns as they arise.

Demonstrates effective time management project management and inventory control skills.

Prepares and compounds medications by using aseptic technique to ensure safe products for patients under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

Accurately prepares and compounds medications including IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy solutions, and medicated drips.

Demonstrates aseptic technique when preparing sterile IV preparations and obtains yearly re-certification of Aseptic Technique.
