Patient Safety Sitter (full-time)

Work Schedule:  Days or Nights available; 3 variable shifts of 7am-7:30pm OR 3 variable shifts of 7pm-7:30am including 2 weekend shifts per 6 week schedule

JOB SUMMARY

Provide quality patient safety monitoring services under supervision of a licensed professional. Proactively maintain a safe environment for the patient by providing 1:1 continuous monitoring/reliable video monitoring and reporting potential unsafe and harmful behaviors.

EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Academic healthcare-related courses
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to remain calm and manage verbal/physical responses in stressful situations
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher rating within 30 days of employment
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
  1. Maintains a safe environment for the patient through 1:1 continuous monitoring that includes remaining within arm’s length and facing the patient at all times, including during bathroom and shower activities.
  2. Complies with all related policies requiring a patient safety sitter role (i.e. suicide policy, restraint policies). 
  3. May perform/document components of safety monitoring and general care needs (eating, hydration, and/or elimination).
  4. Performs reliable video monitoring in areas that video monitoring is available and/or performed.
  5. Communicates and interacts with patients and family in a therapeutic and respectful manner, with intent to minimize escalation of behaviors.
  6. Monitors for behavior changes and escalates any untoward events (i.e. behavior changes, violent behavior) to appropriate staff, and responds appropriately to direction given by healthcare team members.
  7. Accompanies patient to medical procedures to maintain 1:1 continuous monitoring requirements.
  8. Accurately documents data collected and behaviors observed on assigned patient in EMR, according to establish time frames.
  9. Participates in transfer of care (patient safety sitter to patient safety sitter, patient safety sitter to nurse, patient safety sitter to other care team members); communicates any special considers, care priorities, and support needs as appropriate.
  10. Maintains patients' rights, including the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
