Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s) has an opening for a Transfusion Medicine and Apheresis Physician. This position will report to the Chief of Pathology and serve as a critical member of the laboratory team in this large pediatric healthcare system.  The Transfusion Medicine and Apheresis Physician will join a group of eighteen pathology faculty members based at Children’s, nine of whom are existing Clinical Pathologists or PhD laboratory scientists.  The department is known for outstanding pediatric clinical and anatomic pathology services, including a national presence in pediatric pathology and laboratory medicine.  Successful candidates should demonstrate competency in transfusion medicine and good interpersonal skills, allowing for productive interactions with other transfusion medicine specialists, members of the department, technical staff, and caregivers. The ability to work both within and outside the department to lead or support research in transfusion medicine is also important. There are abundant opportunities for academic pursuits and teaching.


  • Doctor of allopathic or osteopathic medicine or equivalent
  • Successful completion of post-graduate residency training program or fellowship in pathology or a related field


  1. Provides clinical services as needed in the area of anatomic or clinical pathology.
  2. Directs referral of specimens to appropriate labs for ancillary studies as required.
  3. Maintains regulatory standards and performs duties in accordance with CLIA and other agencies. As appropriate, executes on duties delegated by the chief of pathology.
  4. Serves as consultant on outside specimens as required.
  5. Holds conferences to support Children’s medical staff.
  6. Teaches residents and fellows.
  7. Assists in resolving issues in the lab.
  8. Participates in the call schedule to provide 24 hour coverage of clinical and/or anatomic pathology services.
  9. Supports an environment in the department of pathology that facilitates retention, recruitment and the professional growth of all staff.
  10. Collaborates with Children’s in customer service initiatives.
  11. Collaborates with Children’s to achieve the highest possible quality of care.
  12. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
  13. Assists in monitoring quality indicators including reports to the Physician Practice Council as needed.


  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Georgia
  • Board certified or eligible in pathology or laboratory subspecialty


  • Expertise in pediatric pathology


  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated skills and aptitude for conflict resolution, problem-solving, staff development and time management
  • Meets eligibility requirements for credentialing as part of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Professional Staff

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
