Medical Technologist 2 - Blood Bank

JOB SUMMARY

Provides timely and quality clinical information and improved patient outcomes by accurately performing laboratory tests and procedures.  Works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients and care providers. Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing team member duties to ensure consistent use of Lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements.  Assists leadership team with administrative and technical support to proactively support the efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and to promote a safe environment at Children's.

EDUCATION
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science is required
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent)
  • Eligible for classification as a supervisor by the Georgia Department of Human Resources
EXPERIENCE*
  • A minimum of three years previous experience in blood banking
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Pediatrics experience
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*
  • Must have technical expertise for all procedures within a functional area
  • Requires independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision
  • Requires strong organizational capabilities, good communication skills and exhibits enthusiasm and willingness to work with others
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

General

  1. Performs all activities as defined by the Med Tech I job description. 
  2. Performs assigned testing as scheduled.
  3. Performs assigned verification duties.
  4. Assists in designing, implementing, and evaluating new procedures and revising existing procedures.
  5. Understands and adheres to Lean principles such as standard work and 5S, and that processes are designed to meet the needs of the customer.

Technical

  1. Assists in monitoring accuracy, precision, and efficiency in the performance of assays and the operation of equipment in the Transfusion, Tissue and Apheresis Services Department.
  2. Assists in the examination of reporting of patient and proficiency results
  3. Assists in the resolution of problems in the specialty area. Obtain additional assistance if necessary. Updates the Operation Supervisor of all related issues.
  4. Oversees quality control and implements corrective action when indicated or as assigned.
  5. Monitors all performance check systems and preventative maintenance for instruments and equipment.
  6. Assists with evaluation and selection of new equipment.
  7. Completes applicable training of all employees and students who may rotate or work in the department. Assists with the development of training modules as requested.
  8. Maintains appropriate level of supplies and reagents, and if necessary determines appropriate substitutes.
  9. Assists with maintaining current files of reference materials.

 Administrative

  1. Assists with staff schedule to maintain a minimum of two deep coverage and operates within budgetary restraints.
  2. Assists with reconciling billing as assigned.
  3. Assists with auditing daily, weekly and monthly activity reports. Consults with Laboratory Quality Department on facilitating corrective actions as indicated.
  4. Assists operations supervisor and manager with annual performance evaluations.

Teaching

  1. Assists with training, staff development, and competency programs for the department.
  2. Provides portions of new employee orientation and staff development.
  3. Promotes a cooperative environment between students and staff providing a positive learning atmosphere.
  4. Presents practical information to students through various methods such as bench experience, shadowing, handouts, and case studies. 
  5. Assesses practical abilities by administering exams.
  6. Evaluates interactive behavior, theoretical knowledge, and practical abilities of students. 
  7. Ensures the status of mandatory competency and training requirements are communicated to the Operations Supervisor.
  8. Assists with the documentation of competency and training assessment as needed.

Instrument and Equipment

  1. As assigned, maintains records of instrument maintenance, whether performed in-house or under a service contract. Notifies Security any vendor visits.
  2. Notifies the Operations Supervisor of any instrument, calibration, or linearity issues.
  3. Verifies all daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance is performed and documented as scheduled.
  4. Makes recommendations to the Medical Technologist III/Operations Supervisor concerning instrument replacements, upgrades, and/or operations.
  5. Assists with the validation, precision, and correlation studies of new methods for existing and new instrumentation.
  6. Performs or assists in all instrument troubleshooting.
  7. Monitors instrument reagent and supplies inventories, in conjunction with the supervisors’ orders as necessary.
  8. Monitors calibration and linearity checks as defined in the instrument manuals.
  9. Works closely with Laboratory Quality to ensure that quality control is maintained and up to date.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
