Mechanical Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

Coordinates and supervises the facilities engineering program for the area of expertise for the system. Provides general engineering support for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta System. Conducts specialized and complex facilities engineering studies and supports all building systems, utility operations, and maintenance activities to optimize system operations. Supports the engineering staff in the day-to-day operations of the building systems, working to achieve highly efficient system operations and superior cost management. Ensures that the building systems operate efficiently and dependably in compliance with all appropriate regulatory agencies to provide and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff on hospital campuses, at satellite facilities, and at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Support Center. Effectively communicates with personnel across all levels of the organization.

EDUCATION

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY

• Professional Engineer (PE) in Mechanical Engineering

Not Required but Preferred:
• Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
• Operations & Performance Management Professional (OPMP)
• Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP)
• Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM)

EXPERIENCE*

• 10 years of experience in healthcare operations, design, and/or consulting engineering
• 10 years of experience in complex project management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*

• Knowledge of building life safety, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standards
• Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Joint Commission standards
• Expertise in reading blue prints, including architectural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing
• Ability to interpret equipment specifications and operations/maintenance manuals
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows 9810, and computer maintenance software including PlanGrid, CxAlloy FM, and AutoCAD
• Must be able to direct and coordinate assigned projects and daily operations

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

1. Initiates and implements engineering studies on building systems.
2. Manages utility systems to achieve cost-effective operations.
3. Identifies and defines scope for improvement projects, system upgrades, operational changes, and capital improvement projects.
4. Supports the Engineering preventative maintenance program, ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies.   
5. Manages the Engineering capital and operational projects for successful execution of the goals and objectives.      
6. Supports the Engineering staff in the review and management of service contracts with all contractors and vendors for the efficient and effective operation of the department in compliance with all budget and fiscal goals.
7. Supports Construction (PD&C) Capital projects with plan/submittal reviews, and/or coordination.
8. Support/Lead Commissioning efforts of new equipment and/or systems. Act as stakeholder for any 3rd-Party Commissioning Agent involved.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
