Managing Director, Public Investments

JOB SUMMARY

The Managing Director, Public Investments provides senior level oversight of the Public and Marketables portfolio areas including: Public Equity, Credit, Hedge Funds, Cash and Rates.This leader will have the opportunity to build and oversee a team of 3-5 investment professionals dedicated to the Publics efforts, and reports to Children’s Chief Investment Officer.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Provide oversight of the whole Marketables portfolio under CIO guidance to manage existing and prospective investment manager work-flow (i.e. sourcing, evaluating, selecting, recommending, and monitoring fund investments) in the folllowing categories:
    • Long-Only Equities globally – U.S., international developed, emerging markets, including country/regional specific mandates, and sector mandates
    • Hedge Funds – Both directional and diversifying strategies
    • Credit – including but not limited to performing credit mandates, opportunistic credit, stressed/distressed, direct lending, long/short credit
    • Cash and Rates – U.S. Treasury portfolios and other interest rates sensitive securities
  2. Monitor and continuously re-underwrite exposures in the following categories:
    • Maintains close relationships and communication with existing managers in these categories.
    • Maintains an ongoing pipeline of prospective managers in these categories, and develops relationships with managers of interest.
    • Analyzes portfolio performance, risk factors and exposures and cash flow projections in these categories.
    • Conducts comprehensive research and assessment of valuations and trends in these categories.
  3. Recruit, manage, train, and mentor mid- and junior-level investment personnel focused on the Marketables portfolios.
  4. Work with the CIO on a total portfolio level and sub-portfolio level to report on the linkages of asset allocation, exposure measurement, performance attribution, liquidity monitoring, and statistical risk measurement (Risk Management).
  5. Work collaboratively and continuously engage all members of the Investment team to provide independent, rigorous insights on potential decisions across the Fund’s portfolio, including those not under direct responsibility.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree engineering, mathematics, finance, accounting, business, economics, social sciences or related field. 

EXPERIENCE*

At least ten (10) years of nvestment management experience.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*

  • Demonstrated track record of sourcing and creating a portfolio of Public Equity and Hedge Funds Investments
  • Deep expertise in and industry knowledge of the manager landscapes for all Long-Only and Hedge Fund Strategies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication (written and spoken), presentation, and interpersonal skill, including a strong executive presence.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities.
  • Results orientation with ability to quickly assimilate data and communicate results.
  • Strong project management skills. Proven ability to develop project plans, provide regular updates to project sponsors, and adjust project direction as needed.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex assignments with proven ability to assess competing priorities in a high energy, fast paced environment.
  • Practical in approach—has a natural orientation to getting things accomplished quickly in a high quality way and maximizes results with available resources.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading high performing teams. Strong orientation to provide situational leadership, tailoring leadership approach based on the needs of the individual. Transparent and able to incorporate feedback into personal performance.
  • History of building and fostering trusting, sustainable relationships with key stakeholders. Able to collaborate and partner with other subject matter experts and business leaders.

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY

No professional certifications required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Master's degree in business administration (MBA) and/or advanced degree in economics, finance, or math.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification.
  • Investment management experience at a $2 billion plus Endowment, Foundation, or Family Office.
  • Investment previous distinction of Asset Class Head or Lead managing a team focused on Public / Marketable Investments.
