Leads and manages resources and processes by which all lab-related information systems technology and applications are designed, planned, tested, implemented, and maintained, including systems primarily focused on supporting internal lab operations (e.g., Sunquest, CoPath) and systems primarily focused on supporting external users to access lab support and information (Epic).  Collaborates with Epic leadership team and is integrated into organization-level strategy to ensure lab activities and support are integrated into strategic and tactical planning, resourcing, and implementation of information systems. Works closely with Patient Billing and Revenue Cycle to establish, manage, and maintain systems and processes that ensure accurate, comprehensive, and compliant billing for all laboratory services in accordance with current organizational-level payor agreements, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta policies, and relevant accrediting and regulatory agencies. Actively promotes a lean work culture by performing value-stream manager duties to ensure understanding and consistent use of lean principles and processes.


  • Master’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Medical Technology with Health Information Systems concentration, Health Administration (with Health Information Systems concentration), or MBA with Health Information Systems concentration



  • Experience in Sunquest, including training
  • 5 years of experience in working with laboratory information systems
  • 5 years of experience in a managerial role supervising technical positions


  • 10 years of experience in working with laboratory information systems
  • Certification of relevant Epic modules


  • Knowledge of Epic functionality, especially as relates to request and using lab services

  1. Represents laboratory in organization-wide Information Systems & Technology initiatives to help plan, design, implement, and operate all systems and functionality, including ordering lab tests and accessing lab data for the purpose of diagnosing, treating, and managing patients.
  2. Serves as member of the Information Systems & Technology groups that strategize, plan, design, test, implement, and validate the lab portion of implementations.
  3. Leads and manages lab-related Epic interface and integration to support standard lab orders, reporting, and convenience to users, including all new implementations and remediation of existing Epic implementations, and works closely with lab leadership and Pathologist Informaticist to achieve those tasks.
  4. Maintains current level of support and develops new applications for lab information systems (Sunquest, CoPath) to support clinical laboratory operations, including, building tests, building and implementing new interfaces, implementing new Sunquest and CoPath functionality and modules, and extracting utility from the system required for efficient lab operations.
  5. Develops, implements, trains or arranges for training, and propagates appropriate use of such tools and systems as required to support retrieval of lab data  using QlikView and other tools available in Sunquest and Epic in collaboration with Business Intelligence department.
  6. Establishes, leads, and manages, in collaboration with lab technical leadership, those activities performed by technical staff that impact the lab’s ability to document patient activity and lab services required to generate accurate and prompt billing in compliance and concert with related departments, including Managed Care, Revenue Cycle, Patient Financial Services, Patient Access, and Finance.
  7. Works with lab technical leadership to develop and ensure staff comply with processes that support clean, accurate, prompt, and efficient billing, including accurate patient/specimen registration, recording of services provided to outside clients, timely and appropriate insurance verification, and knowledgeable review of invoices sent to outside clients.
  8. Works with lab technical leadership, Supply Chain, Sourcing, and Accounts Payable to facilitate prompt payment of bona fide bills for lab information system-related equipment and activities.
  9. Works with lab and Information Systems & Technology to develops strategy for updating and, if appropriate, replacement of lab information system in a manner and timeline compatible with lab and Information Systems & Technology strategic objectives and overall Children's Healthcare of Atlanta mission and strategy.
  10. Responsible for all aspects of managing and leading a team including: interviewing, hiring, training, developing, directing work and processes, managing performance, recognizing, and rewarding employees.
  11. Mentor team members to encourage personal and professional growth.
  12. Encourage ongoing skill development by providing opportunities for continued education.


Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
