JOB SUMMARY

Assists pharmacist and prepares medications to be dispensed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist according to State and Federal law.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY

  • Georgia pharmacy technician registration 
  • National certification as a pharmacy technician

EXPERIENCE*

  • 5 years of experience as a full-time Children's Healthcare of Atlanta pharmacy technician

  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher rating within 30 days of employment

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Performs all job functions as described in Pharmacy Technician II job description.
  2. Maintains and assists in development of pharmacy services.
    • Contributes to effective operation of the department.
    • Supports and helps implement all new policies, changes, and functions in pharmacy areas.
    • Supports and helps with projects related to patient safety, Joint Commission, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
    • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately and files documentation in appropriate locations.
    • Coordinates completion and resolution of controlled substance administration record sheets (drip sheets) for each specialty area.
    • Notifies pharmacy manager immediately of any controlled substance discrepancies.
    • Supports Pyxis operations in individual specialty area.
    • Assists with annual department competencies and participates in training material development.
    • Teaches others through example of high professional standards that support department goals and provision of pharmaceutical care.
    • Accepts responsibility and accountability for continuous improvement and quality assurance measurements of work area(s).
    • Adheres to health system and department policies and procedures.
  3. Maintains competency in multiple pharmacy areas.  
    • Helps with providing and ensuring coverage for work areas due to planned, excused, and/or unexcused absences of technician support staff.
    • Consistently demonstrates the ability to maintain a smooth workflow and problem solve for technician work areas.
    • Completes all competencies/skills assessment requirements and attends all required system classes in a timely manner.
  4. Sets an example of personal and departmental excellence and displays a positive and professional leadership attitude in difficult situations.
    • Displays and encourages a positive attitude with fellow technicians, pharmacists, and healthcare providers.
    • Performs work within specified time frames and adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or schedule.
    • Provides excellent customer service to fellow technicians, fellow pharmacists, and healthcare providers outside the pharmacy.
    • Works cooperatively with all staff and voices concerns/suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
    • Supports teamwork within all pharmacy areas.
    • Works closely with and supports all team leaders and managers to help resolve problems.
    • Serves as liaison between pharmacy and nursing staff to resolve issues.
    • Provides and displays leadership in all job functions.
    • Serves as role model for Level I and II pharmacy technicians.
  5. Maintains inventory of specialized area and works closely with buyer to coordinate inventory needs in a cost-effective manner.
    • Works with pharmacy team leaders/manager to set inventory levels in specialty area and ensures area is appropriately stocked.
    • Works directly with buyer regarding inventory needs.
    • Works with pharmacy team leader/manager and buyer to resolve problems or issues in inventory and availability of medications and supplies.
    • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
    • Ensures that expiration date checking for area is performed completely, precisely, and in a timely manner.
    • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized and pharmacy equipment clean and properly calibrated.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
