The program allows interns the opportunity to gain hands-on experience related to their field of study by working on meaningful projects alongside Children’s professionals.  Interns may explore career paths and apply for full-time positions upon successful completion of the program. The Business Intelligence - Data Services team is seeking one intern to assist in a technical discovery and documentation project in Children’s Business Intelligence department. The Data Services team is responsible for designing and maintaining data solutions used by business applications as well as for reporting and analytics throughout the organization. SQL Server and Oracle solutions integrate with numerous enterprise systems, supported both internally and by various vendors.

  • Progression toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Technical Writing, MIS, or similar is required

    • Experience with modeling tools such as Visio or ER Studio
    • Ability to interpret and create common UML models including activity diagrams, swim lane process diagrams
    • Understanding of OO concepts
    • Understanding of basic networking concepts
    • Understanding of typical database and application server implementations
    • Ability to perform basic SQL queries
    • Ability to code in PowerShell, Bash Scripting, and/or Python
  • Classroom or work experience with MS SQL Server or Oracle preferred

The goal of the Technical Discovery and Documentation project is to consolidate existing environment and process information into standards-based artifacts for future utilization. Some of the information is not documented at all and must be elicited from technical staff and various SMEs. There are three main areas of focus for this project:

  • Data Environment Documentation
    • Database and server environment maps
    • Data asset inventory
    • Data flow diagrams
    • Vendor dependencies
  • Data Services Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Scenario-based process documentation for standard tasks performed by technical staff, including DBAs and Data Warehouse Engineers.
  • Major System Dependencies and Data Flow
    • UML-based mapping of major underlying systems and their dependencies
    • Inventory of automatic processes including their trigger conditions, supportability, dependencies, and other key information

After initial training and orientation, the intern will work with a great deal of independence to meet their deliverables. The intern, however, will have support of at least one Children’s Business Analyst and Technical Writer when needed to assist in the documentation expectations and provide further training where needed. In order to accomplish their tasks, the intern will be embedded within the Data Services technical teams as required. They will utilize existing documentation, where it exists, and create documents based on current standards and templates.

A project lead will work with the intern to assign tasks that best fit their interests and skillsets. Deliverables will be agreed upon based on the interns’ work schedule and presented to the entire team at the end of the engagement.

These positions provide an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to an innovative Business Intelligence environment at the largest Children’s hospital system in Georgia. Interns will get valuable experience along with an inside behind-the-scenes look at the work required to keep large-scale systems running smoothly.


Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.


Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
