Coding Educator/Process Improvement Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

Provides education and training in coding, documentation, and billing compliance within department to enhance the skill set of coding professionals to support coding operations. Develops and facilitates non-medical staff training and development programs, including new employee orientation, skills training, team building, customer service, and change management. Conducts needs analysis to identify skills and competencies, and develops/recommends training. Contributes to the execution of the department vision and strategies by identifying and executing improvement opportunities. Leads and facilitates the identification of key measures, data analysis, process improvement, and the implementation of redesigned processes for operational functions. 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in health information management or 10 years of experience in HIM or revenue cycle at the managerial level

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY

  • Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Epic certification within one year of employment

EXPERIENCE*

  • Five years of experience in combined acute care hospital and physician practice/clinic-based coding
  • Two years of experience in teaching coding and documentation compliance concepts to students, interns, staff, and clinicians           
  • Experience in revenue cycle, finance, or project management
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in interpreting and applying federal/government regulations to ensure coding and documentation compliance
  • Experience in leading team

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Master's degree in healthcare, business, engineering, or related field
  • Certification in facilitation, process improvement, project management, or related field
  • Management of large statistical data with proven analysis skills (e.g., clinical, operational, customer service)
  • EPIC or 3M experience

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*

  • Demonstrated experience in clinical documentation for all healthcare settings and healthcare disciplines
  • Advanced knowledge base of the conventions, rules, and guidelines for multiple classification and reimbursement systems (e.g., ICD -10, diagnosis-related group, and all patient refined diagnosis-related group)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, computerized abstracting/coding systems, and electronic health records
  • Independent judgment and action skills in order to facilitate needed change in practice
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for one-on-one interaction and facilitating group discussions

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Provides onboarding and delivers education and updates to coding interns and internal coding staff regarding coding, documentation, and billing practices to meet regulatory requirements and capture appropriate revenue.
  2. Conducts routine skills assessments to identify learning challenges and opportunities.
  3. Prepares and conducts needs analysis to determine training needs. 
  4. Develops internship program curricula and instructional materials that support and enhance learning objectives.
  5. Provides regular training updates to department leadership regarding intern program participants' skills assessments and training needs.
  6. Supports and participates in the continuous assessment and improvement of department training needs.
  7. Communicates team recommendations effectively
  8. Facilitates delivery of basic, intermediate, and advanced quality and service training modules to management and staff.
  9. Develops supporting instructional materials that enhance the learning objective.
  10. Evaluates and implements new initiatives that assist in the achievement of system goals.
  11. Maintains professional development by expanding knowledge base of methodologies and techniques including continuous quality improvement, statistical process control, Six Sigma, and Lean.
  12. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and contributes to departmental achievement of financial goals (Revenue Cycle).
  13. Develops quality, service, and financial metrics to assess the overall success of improvement efforts.
  14. Works with other members of the team to ensure consistency and seamlessness in service experience, financial or operational performance.
  15. Facilitates failure modes and effects analyses to identify and eliminate or minimize points of risk through process redesign.
  16. Facilitates multidisciplinary teams using performance improvement methodology to evaluate processes and systems, generate alternatives and make recommendations to reduce waste, increase utilization, reduce costs, improve customer satisfaction, and produce improved financial outcomes.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
