Advanced Practice Provider Director

JOB SUMMARY

The Advanced Practice Provicer Director provides strategic and operational leadership for Advanced Practice Providers (APP). They lead APP workforce planning, professional development, performance analysis, and enhancement. The Director collaborates across the organization with clinical and administrative leaders on designing and implementing an APP workforce strategy to optimize clinical care. This leader is responsible for prioritization that aligns with the overall organizational strategy, achieves high-quality care, and patient safety that supports a performance improvement culture. The Director functions as primary resource regarding APP practice principles.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

  1. Responsible for guiding APPs (Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants), in collaboration with nursing and medical leadership.
  2. Fosters an environment of shared decision-making, promotes multidisciplinary collaboration regarding patient care and related concerns. Facilitates communication and cooperation across departments to ensure the standardization and continuum of care.
  3. Drives optimal performance throughout all areas of APP practice within the organization. Provides oversight and education about scope of practice, regulatory requirements, collaborative agreements, credentialing, privileging, billing compliance, and onboarding of APPs. Works collaboratively across the organization to build systems and structures to support high-performing provider teams and optimize APP workforce.
  4. Partners with Medical Staff Services on the development, implementation, and monitoring of the APP Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE/FPPE).
  5. Ensures representation of APPs on all system-wide quality, safety, and Medical Staff leadership committees. Identifies quality and safety issues in coordination with medical staff & implements appropriate action for resolution.
  6. Responsible for development of a sustainable APP leadership model that includes professional growth, succession planning, and leadership development.
  7. Serves as the APP expert and institutional change agent to model and facilitate system-wide cultural change, educational, and professional development of APPs.
  8. Provides budget recommendations related to APP. Partners with Learning for APP student placements.
  9. Develops measurable performance metrics for APPs that are consistent with the organization goals, strategies, and quality and safety standards.
  10. Participates and represents CHOA in the community, state, region, and nationally. Works in partnership with nursing and physician leadership to ensure APPs practice to the full extent of their license and education, as defined by their governing bodies.
  11. Serves as a member of appropriate administrative and clinical committees at the senior leadership level.

EXPERIENCE*

  • Five (5) years in a clinical leadership role.
  • Five (5) years of APRN or Physician Assistant experience.

EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant studies.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*

  •  
  • Excellent communication, both written & verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong presentation skills to showcase credibility and effectiveness.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the APRN & PA scope of practice, licensure requirements, regulatory and certification requirements and credentialling process.
  • Ability to develop sound business and financial plans as it relates to the utilization of the APP role.
  • Ability to build, collaborate and sustain business relationships across a healthcare system.
  • Desire to help drive the success and leverage of the APP role within a complex academic healthcare setting.
  • Possesses analytical and critical thinking skills to resolve complex administrative challenges
  •  Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team, including but not limited to, administrative teams, physicians, nurses, clinical support teams, patients/families, and others from the community to achieve customer goals.
  •  Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
     

CERTIFICATION SUMMARY

  • APRN or Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C).
  • Eligible for Georgia clinical licensure and prescriptive privileges.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Additional certifications as determined by area of practice.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • PhD or Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • Experience working with and/or overseeing APPs in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Previous experience in an academic healthcare setting.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
